Baptism is a very special and exciting step in your faith journey! It is a public statement of your decision to follow Jesus. Baptism symbolizes that our old life, defined by sin, is being put to death (Romans 6:4). When you are raised up out of the water it symbolizes that your new life, defined by what Jesus has done for you, has begun! God instructs believers to be baptized. Your decision to be baptized is an act of obedience to Jesus (Acts 2:38)

WHAT IS BAPTISM?

Baptism is an announcement of your decision to follow Jesus and how He has changed your life. Baptism symbolizes that our old life, defined by sin, is being put to death (Romans 6:4). When you are raised up out of the water it symbolizes that your new life, defined by what Jesus has done for you, has begun! It allows others to celebrate this decision with you (Acts 16:31-34). Baptism doesn’t save a person; it’s a symbol and celebration of salvation (1 Peter 3:21).

Baptism is not an act of salvation, because we are saved by faith in Jesus alone. However, baptism is an important step in a believer’s walk with Jesus. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He gave His disciples a list of instructions for how to proceed in finishing the work He began on earth. We call this the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20). Baptism is an integral part of your faith journey. It is a step of obedience that takes place between the first moment of salvation and the life-long process of maturing in your faith and conforming to the image of Jesus.

WHEN SHOULD I GET BAPTIZED?

As soon as you have made the decision to believe in Jesus and follow Him for the rest of your life, you are ready to be baptized! It is a personal decision, but we encourage you to do so without delay. In the Bible, we see that new believers in the book of Acts were baptized immediately following salvation (Acts 10:34-48). Therefore, you are ready to be baptized as soon as you understand what baptism means and are ready to declare that you want to follow Jesus forever.

If you haven’t been baptized by immersion since you decided to follow Jesus, we want to help you take your next step of being baptized. Once you’ve taken that step, there’s no need to be baptized again. God never asks us to take a next step that isn’t good for us. He always gives us more than we deserve or can imagine, including the joy we receive from listening to Him and doing what He says.
